This section uses evidence we collected ourselves: 61 daily reads of both pricing pages between 10 July and 19 September 2026, both Google Play listings read on 19 September 2026, and the two companies' own corporate announcements. ### These two VPNs have belonged to the same group since 2022, which most comparisons never mention

Before any feature row matters, one structural fact should be on the table: NordVPN and Surfshark are not rival companies in the ordinary sense. On **1 February 2022** Surfshark and Nord Security announced a completed merger. Surfshark's own announcement is the primary source, and its wording is specific: the two would “continue to operate as autonomous companies relying on separate infrastructures and different product development plans,” and “nothing changes concerning our brands, infrastructure, company management, employees, and product development.”

We take that statement at face value — it is a public commitment, and the products have in fact continued to diverge. But it changes what this comparison *is*. Choosing between NordVPN and Surfshark is choosing between two products inside one corporate group, not spreading your risk across two independent companies. For most buyers that is irrelevant. For a specific and smaller group it is the whole question.

Surfshark's pricing page stated a renewal figure on no day at all.

What each page actually said, on the day we wrote this. NordVPN: *“€94.23 for the first 27 months. VAT may apply… Renews at €139.08/year.”* Surfshark: *“€2.49/mo… Today you will pay €0.00. After the free trial, you will be charged €67.23 for a 27-month subscription (plus tax).”* Surfshark's sentence is clear about the first term and silent about the second. NordVPN's names both.

A provider's advertised price is not a property of the product. It is a number on a page that changes without announcement, and the only way to know whether the deal in front of you is a good one is to have watched the same page for a while. We did.

-   → **Surfshark went up once and has not moved since.** €2.29 until 21 July, €2.49 from 22 July onward — sixty days at the same figure. It showed its own best price on only 7 of 61 captured days, all of them in the first fortnight of our window.
-   → **Both are currently at their most recent rate rather than their best one.** Surfshark's cheapest observed price this summer was €2.29, not the €2.49 on the page today. Neither provider's current price is the lowest we have seen it.
-   → **A “Deal ends in:” countdown appeared on Surfshark's page for exactly three days.** Our tracker records countdown elements separately. It found one on Surfshark's pricing page on 28, 29 and 30 August 2026 and on no other day, and none on NordVPN's page in the whole window. The price did not change when that countdown ran, and it did not change when it stopped — €2.49 before, during and after.
-   → **Days with no successful capture are drawn flat.** The chart holds the last known figure across a gap rather than inventing one, so a flat stretch can be a stable price or a missing read. Both look identical.

💡 The practical read: on this evidence neither price is a deadline, and both have moved within a 40-cent band all summer. The cost of buying on the wrong day is a few euros over 27 months. The cost of missing a renewal date is the gap between €3.49 and €11.59 a month — which is why the previous section matters more than this one.

### The Play listings settle the size question and refuse to settle the quality one

Everything above comes from the providers themselves. Google's app listing is one of the few places a third party publishes facts about a VPN that the VPN cannot edit: the star average and the sample behind it, the install bucket, the last shipped build, and whether Google shows an **Independent security review** badge in the Data safety panel. We read both listings on the US storefront on 19 September 2026.
