Its developer specifications (updated 30 September 2026) list three sticks on **Vega OS**, Amazon's Linux-based system: the **Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025)**, the **HD (2026)** and the **4K 3rd Gen (2026)**. Every other stick runs Android-based Fire OS: the 4K Plus (2025), 4K Max and 4K 2nd Gen (2023) on Fire OS 8; the HD (2024), Lite, 3rd Gen (2020) and 4K Max 1st Gen (2021) on Fire OS 7; the 4K 1st Gen (2018) on Fire OS 6. Mind the name: the 2024 HD runs Fire OS, the 2026 HD runs Vega. Fire OS apps don't run on Vega, so each provider needs a separate Vega app, installed from the Appstore. Five of the nine VPNs we cover have one: **ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish and Proton VPN**. PIA says it is “not currently compatible with Amazon's Vega OS”, CyberGhost and PureVPN have published nothing on Vega, and TotalVPN has no Fire TV app at all. IPVanish notes that Amazon devices show no key icon when a VPN is on, so check the status inside the app. ## If your situation is different You have a Fire TV Stick 4K Select, HD (2026) or 4K 3rd Gen (Vega OS) Choose ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish or Proton VPN, the five with Vega apps, and expect fewer settings. PIA says it is not compatible. Put the VPN on your router or move to a newer stick. Amazon's Prime Video Terms of Use (updated 26 August 2026) say Amazon “will use technologies to verify your geographic location” and that you may not obscure or disguise it. ExpressVPN's Fire TV guide advises picking a server location that matches your Amazon account's country. ### Why does Netflix show error E106 on my Fire TV? Netflix says E106 comes with the message “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”, and that VPNs are not supported for Live events or on ad-supported plans. Disconnect for Netflix, or exclude it with split tunnelling on Fire OS. ### Can I sideload a VPN onto a Fire TV Stick? On Fire OS, yes: Settings › Device & Software › Developer Options › Install unknown apps, then the Downloader app with the address from the provider's own site (PIA and ExpressVPN publish theirs). On Vega OS, no: ExpressVPN states “Sideloading is not supported” there. ### Will the VPN reconnect by itself after the TV restarts?
