[Android TV](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/free-vpn/for-android-tv) / Google TV sets (Sony, many TCL and Hisense models, some Philips) and Fire TV sets run real apps, so a free VPN app installs on the TV — see our Android TV guide. But Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) smart TVs — the two biggest brands — do NOT support VPN apps at all, and neither do Philips' Titan OS sets or Roku TVs. On a Samsung, LG or Titan OS Philips, the free route is a router that accepts a WireGuard configuration. If the goal is another country's streaming library, no free plan supports that on any TV. ### A router is the one free route Proton documents for Samsung and LG TVs It is often said that free VPNs cannot run on a router. Proton's router page says otherwise: *"Router connections are available on all Proton VPN plans, including Proton Free"*, and *"the router only counts as one connection on a Free plan, no matter how many devices you connect to it"*. That makes the router the only documented way to put a Samsung, LG, Titan OS or Roku TV behind a free VPN. 1. **Check the router.** Proton says it "must support OpenVPN or WireGuard as a client", and that "most routers provided by internet service providers (ISPs) do not support VPN configurations". Proton has guides for AsusWRT, AsusWRT-Merlin, DD-WRT, FreshTomato, GL.iNet, MikroTik, OpenWRT, OPNsense and pfSense. 2. **Create the configuration.** Sign in at account.protonvpn.com, open Downloads → WireGuard configuration, choose Router as the platform and generate the file. On the free plan the only option offered is VPN Accelerator. 3. **Load it into the router.** In the router's VPN client page, import the file and enable the connection. 4. **Connect the TV to that router's Wi-Fi** as normal. Nothing changes on the TV. 5. **Check from the TV's browser** by opening an IP-check page; it should show the VPN's address, not your provider's. The trade-offs are Proton's own: "you can't switch servers instantly" as you can in the app, and "routers with weaker processors may experience slower speeds". Everything on that router's Wi-Fi shares the one tunnel. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark and CyberGhost each publish a Windows guide for it. NordVPN's says *"a mobile hotspot will not work with the NordLynx protocol. Please enable OpenVPN UDP or OpenVPN TCP instead"*, and Surfshark's also tells you to choose OpenVPN. Proton publishes no sharing guide, and its protocol table lists OpenVPN for the Linux app only. So with Proton VPN Free this route is undocumented: it may work on your PC, and if it doesn't, there is no official fix. The procedure the four providers document on Windows 11 is the same in outline: 1. **Set up before connecting.** ExpressVPN and Surfshark both say to stay disconnected from the VPN while configuring. 2. **Turn on the hotspot.** Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot, then switch it on. Microsoft's page notes you can edit the network name, password and band under Properties. 3. **Open the adapter list.** Press Windows + R, type `ncpa.cpl` and press Enter. 4. **Share the VPN's adapter.** Right-click the provider's adapter → Properties → Sharing → tick "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and select the hotspot, usually listed as "Local Area Connection\*" with a number. 5. **Connect the VPN** in the provider's app, using OpenVPN where the provider requires it. 6. **Join the hotspot from the TV** and keep the laptop awake; CyberGhost notes the VPN "must stay connected" for the shared connection to work. - → **A Mac is not a like-for-like substitute:** Apple's Internet Sharing example is Ethernet in, Wi-Fi out. IPVanish's Mac guide states that wireless sharing is not supported and uses a cable to the TV with a manually created VPN connection. LG says *"available apps and services may vary depending on the region selected in the location settings"*; on 2021 and later sets it is under All Settings → General → System → Location → LG Services Country. Samsung likewise says available apps "may vary depending on your country or region". A VPN changes the address the TV connects from. It does not change which apps the TV's store offers. ### Smart DNS is not free, and in 2026 it changes less than it used to [Smart DNS](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/smart-dns) is the no-app option for Samsung and LG TVs: you type a DNS address into the TV's network settings. None of it is free, since each provider switches it on from inside a paid account. And the feature has been shrinking. Set the TV's DNS back to automatic using the paths above. ### There is no "no download" or browser-based VPN for a Samsung or LG TV Searches for a free browser with a VPN, or a VPN website, for a Samsung or LG TV come up against the TV browser itself. Samsung's e-Manual states of its Internet app: *"File download is not supported"*, so nothing can be installed through it. LG says its web browser's functions "may be more limited compared to PCs or mobile devices", and the menus LG lists include no extension or add-on option. - → **Browser extensions:** neither maker documents a way to add one to the TV browser. The free Proton extension is for Chrome and Firefox on a computer. - → **Web proxy sites:** a proxy page opened in the TV browser would affect only that browser tab. The TV's Netflix, YouTube or iPlayer apps make their own connections and would not go through it. - → **Titan OS on Philips:** its apps are web apps, but Philips documents no way to install anything locally. The routes that need no download on the TV are the ones already covered: a router, a laptop hotspot, or a cable. Each puts the VPN on another device and leaves the TV untouched. ### Casting from a phone doesn't carry its VPN to the TV; an HDMI cable from a laptop does Turning on a free VPN on your phone and casting to the TV usually fails. NordVPN's and Surfshark's support pages both explain that a VPN "can hide your devices from each other on the local network, which blocks casting and mirroring", and that for cast targets you should move the VPN "from the streaming device to the network". ExpressVPN's Chromecast table lists casting from an Android phone with a VPN as not supported, and mirroring as supported. - → **Casting (Chromecast, AirPlay to a TV app):** the TV fetches the video over its own connection, so the phone's VPN is not involved. - → **Screen mirroring:** sends what the phone displays, so it can carry VPN-routed video, at lower quality and only while the VPN allows local network access. - → **HDMI cable:** NordVPN's page notes that HDMI "carries the display over the cable rather than your local network, so the VPN doesn't interfere". A laptop running Proton VPN Free, cabled to the TV, is the simplest free setup on any television. With the cable, the laptop does the streaming and the TV is only a screen. Proton's free-plan limits still apply to what the laptop can reach. ### HD needs about 5 Mbps and 4K needs 15 to 20, by the services' own figures Netflix asks for 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K. YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K. BBC iPlayer's high-quality streams run at up to 5 Mbps.
