Three things change: the Wi-Fi operator or mobile carrier sees a connection to the VPN server instead of the sites and apps you use; those sites and apps see the server's [IP address](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/ip-address) instead of yours; and on untrusted Wi-Fi your traffic is encrypted from the phone to the server. What doesn't change: apps you sign in to still know who you are, and the VPN provider now sits where your carrier used to, which is why its logging policy matters. ### Always-on VPN: built into Android, left to the app on iPhone [Android](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/android) can start a VPN service when the phone boots and keep it running, and Google's developer documentation says Always-on VPN "can also block connections that don't use the VPN" — available since [Android](https://vpnrank.io/blog/how-to-set-up-vpn-on-android) 7.0. You turn it on under Settings → Network & internet → VPN → the gear next to your VPN. On iPhone, Apple documents Always On VPN as an IKEv2 feature that gives "your organization" control, so on a personal iPhone protection depends on each VPN app's own kill switch. ### Why iPhone apps can't split traffic per app Apple's deployment guide says that to use per-app VPN on [iPhone](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/ios) and iPad, "a device management service needs to manage the app" — so it is reserved for phones managed by an employer or school. Android has no such limit: a VPN app can give the system a list of apps to include or exclude, and Google's documentation notes that excluded apps "use system networking as if the VPN wasn't running". That is the whole reason all eight VPNs here split per app on Android and none does on [iPhone](https://vpnrank.io/blog/how-to-set-up-vpn-iphone-ios). ### Browser VPN extensions are not a phone option Open the Chrome Web Store on a phone and Google's help page says the button reads "Add to Desktop": the extension installs on your computer, not the phone. On Mozilla's add-on store, none of the official add-ons from the VPNs we track was marked compatible with [Firefox](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/firefox) for Android on 7 October 2026. On a phone, the provider's app is the VPN; the extension comparisons are on our Chrome VPN extension page. ### Benefits and risks of a VPN on an Android phone The benefits are encryption on untrusted Wi-Fi, a different IP address for apps and sites, and per-app control over what uses the tunnel. The risk sits in the permission itself: a VPN app can see all the traffic it carries. The peer-reviewed IMC 2016 study of 283 free Android apps using the VPN permission found that 18% tunnelled traffic without encryption, and that about 84% did not tunnel IPv6 traffic and 66% did not tunnel DNS. Choose an established provider and keep Android's Block connections without VPN switch on. ## What to Compare in a Mobile VPN Phones switch networks constantly and run on a battery, and the operating system limits what a VPN app may do. A missing badge means no completed review is shown on the listing, not that an app failed one. ### Network Switching Your phone moves between Wi-Fi and [mobile data](https://vpnrank.io/blog/do-you-need-a-vpn-on-your-phone) many times a day. [IKEv2](https://vpnrank.io/blog/wireguard-vs-openvpn-vs-ikev2-vpn-protocols-explained)'s MOBIKE extension (RFC 4555) lets an existing tunnel keep working when the phone's IP address changes, instead of reconnecting from scratch, and wireguard.com says WireGuard is "capable of roaming between IP addresses". Turn on the app's auto-connect so the tunnel comes back after every switch. ### Minimum OS Version On 28 September 2026, NordVPN and [Proton VPN](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/protonvpn) required iOS 17, Surfshark iOS 16.1 and the other five iOS 15.
