How to watch the British Grand Prix live

Watch the British GP free (UK, Channel 4)

Silverstone is the only Grand Prix of the 2026 season shown live and free in the UK. Channel 4 broadcasts the British GP live and free-to-air — on TV and via the Channel 4 app and website (the app is called "Channel 4"; the old "All 4" name was retired in 2023). That covers race day, plus practice and qualifying build-up around it. For every other 2026 round, Channel 4 carries free highlights only, not live coverage. So if you want one F1 race for free this year, this is it — no account, no pay TV, just open Channel 4 and watch live on 5 July.

UK: Sky Sports F1 and NOW (every session live)

Sky Sports is the exclusive live home of F1 in the UK and Ireland, carrying every session of the British GP weekend — all three practice sessions, sprint qualifying, the sprint race, Grand Prix qualifying and the race itself — on Sky Sports F1. If you don't have a Sky subscription, a NOW Sports membership gives you the same live feed on a no-contract day or month pass, which is the cheaper route if you only want F1. Channel 4's live British GP coverage is free, but Sky and NOW are the only way to watch every other 2026 race live in the UK.

US: Apple TV

From 2026, Apple TV holds exclusive US rights to Formula 1 under a five-year deal — ESPN and ABC no longer carry the sport. Every session of the British GP weekend streams on Apple TV, and once you subscribe, F1 TV Premium is bundled into your Apple TV subscription at no extra cost in the US. Some practice sessions and a few select races are available free with just an Apple account, but most races, including marquee rounds, need an Apple TV subscription. There is no traditional free over-the-air F1 in the US anymore, so Apple TV is the route for American viewers.

Watch the British GP from abroad with a VPN

Broadcast rights are geo-locked, so your home feed — Channel 4, Sky/NOW, or Apple TV — stops working the moment you travel. A VPN fixes that: connect to a server back home, then open your usual app as normal. UK fans abroad connect to a UK server and stream the British GP live and free on Channel 4; US fans connect to a US server for Apple TV. There's also a free-live workaround for fans of any nationality — Austria streams the full 2026 season free via ORF or ServusTV (which split the season), so an Austrian server can reach a free live feed. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark all run UK, US and Austrian servers and back a 30-day money-back guarantee.

British Grand Prix 2026 schedule and start time

Silverstone is a Sprint weekend in 2026 — one of only six on the calendar — so the format differs from a standard round. Friday brings one practice session and sprint qualifying; Saturday delivers the short Sprint race followed by Grand Prix qualifying; the main Grand Prix runs on Sunday 5 July 2026, lights out at 3pm BST (UTC+1). For viewers abroad, that 3pm BST start is roughly 10am ET / 7am PT in the US, 4pm CEST across most of Europe, and midnight AEST in eastern Australia. Always check your local broadcaster's listings for exact session times, as support-series scheduling can nudge them.

British Grand Prix 2026 — FAQ

Can I watch the British Grand Prix for free?

Yes. The British GP is the one Formula 1 race of the 2026 season shown live and free-to-air in the UK, on Channel 4 (TV plus the free Channel 4 app and website). No subscription is needed. If you're outside the UK, connect a VPN to a UK server first, then open Channel 4 to stream it live for free. Austria also streams the full season free via ORF or ServusTV (which split the season), so an Austrian VPN server is another free-live route for fans of any nationality.

Which VPN works best for streaming F1?

You want a VPN with reliable servers in the country whose feed you're after and consistent streaming performance. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark all run UK servers (for Channel 4 and Sky/NOW), US servers (for Apple TV) and Austrian servers (for the free ORF/ServusTV feeds). Connect to the right country's server first, then open your streaming app. All three offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can use one across the British GP weekend and beyond risk-free.

Is the British GP 2026 a Sprint weekend?

Yes. Silverstone is one of just six Sprint rounds in 2026 (alongside China, Miami, Canada, the Netherlands and Singapore). That means sprint qualifying and one practice session on Friday, the Sprint race plus Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday, and the main Grand Prix on Sunday 5 July. It is not a standard three-practice weekend.

What time does the British Grand Prix start?

The race starts at 3pm BST (UTC+1) on Sunday 5 July 2026 at Silverstone. That's about 10am ET / 7am PT in the US, 4pm CEST in central Europe, and midnight AEST in eastern Australia. Sprint qualifying is on Friday and the Sprint race plus GP qualifying are on Saturday — check your broadcaster's listings for exact session times.
