Twenty teams, thirty-eight rounds, and a calendar that deliberately does not mirror itself

Serie A 2026/27 is the 125th edition of the Italian championship and the 95th played as a round-robin league. Twenty clubs play 38 rounds between 22 August 2026 and 30 May 2027. Inter defend the title they won last season, their 21st. Venezia, Frosinone and Monza come up from Serie B — after one, two and one season away respectively — in place of Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa. The fixture list, released on 5 June 2026, is asymmetric. That is a deliberate rule rather than an accident: the second half of the season is not a mirror image of the first, and at least eight matchdays must separate the two meetings between any pair of clubs. It is why Inter face Napoli on matchday 3 but do not play the return until matchday 22, and why the Derby della Madonnina falls on matchday 10 with the return on matchday 24. For anyone planning a trip around a specific fixture, the practical consequence is that you cannot work out the return date by adding nineteen to the matchday number. The season is unusually compressed at the front and unusually thin in the middle. There are only two midweek rounds all season — matchday 9 on Wednesday 28 October 2026 and matchday 18 on Wednesday 6 January 2027 — against five in the Premier League. Against that, four weekends are blank: 27 September and 4 October fall inside a single, long FIFA window that runs 21 September to 6 October, then 15 November, then 28 March. The winter break is a single weekend, 26–27 December 2026, after which the league restarts almost immediately with the Epiphany round on 6 January. Why 2026/27 is a rights-cliff season everywhere except Italy

Most season guides tell you which app shows Serie A this year. The more useful question in 2026/27 is which app shows it next year, because a striking number of Serie A's international contracts expire at the same moment: May 2027. The clearest case is the United States. CBS Sports and Lega Serie A extended their agreement on 5 June 2026 — but by a single season, through 2026/27, rather than the multi-year renewal the league wanted. The extension covers 420 matches: all 380 Serie A fixtures on Paramount+, plus Coppa Italia knockout ties and the Supercoppa Italiana, with selected games on the CBS network, CBS Sports Network and the free CBS Sports Golazo Network. The reported value is in the low eight figures a year, against the roughly $75 million a year Serie A commanded from CBS in 2021. A one-season extension at a fifth of the old price is a market telling you it expects to renegotiate. Australia's beIN Sports deal ends at the same point. So does DAZN's three-season Spanish exclusive, which began in 2024/25. So does TLN's Italian-language package in Canada, and so does the TNT Sports minority package in the UK and Ireland that was extended in July 2024. Serie A has also changed how it sells abroad, moving away from a single international agency towards direct deals with broadcasters — which usually means more markets moving at once, and more of them moving to streamers. Two markets are already settled past the cliff. Starzplay renewed exclusively for the Middle East and North Africa through 2027/28, and DAZN extended across Germany, Austria and Switzerland in July 2026 through 2028/29. Italy itself is the most stable of all: the DAZN and Sky domestic deal signed in October 2023 covers five seasons to 2028/29, and Italian reporting suggests the league is aiming far higher for the cycle after it. The practical takeaway for a viewer: if you are choosing between an annual and a monthly plan this season, be aware that in several countries the annual plan outlives the rights.

The one Serie A match a round that Britain and Ireland cannot watch live

There is a rule that surprises people who move to the UK or Ireland: the Saturday afternoon television blackout is not a Premier League policy and does not only apply to English football. It comes from UEFA's Article 48, which lets each national association fix a two-and-a-half-hour Saturday window in which no live football may be broadcast at all. In the UK the closed period runs from 2.45pm to 5.15pm, and DAZN's own UK help pages state those exact times. Because the rule is about the broadcast clock rather than the competition, it catches Serie A too. Italy is one hour ahead of the UK all year — both countries change clocks on the same weekend — so the standard Saturday 15:00 Italian kick-off lands at 14:00 in Britain and runs straight into the closed period; and the Saturday 18:00 Italian kick-off starts at 17:00, fifteen minutes inside it. That is why DAZN's UK service is described as carrying every Serie A match except the one that falls in the Saturday blackout window: not a rights gap, a legal one. What you can do about it depends on where you are. Inside the UK, the honest answer is that you wait for the on-demand replay after the window closes, and stay off social media in the meantime. Outside the UK, no such rule exists — the closed period is a domestic restriction, so Italian, American, Australian and Canadian broadcasters show the same match live and uninterrupted. This is also the mirror image of the situation that sends most people to this page. An Italian living in London does not want the British feed at all; they want DAZN Italia, which shows all ten matches with Italian commentary and no closed period. What is genuinely free, and what only looks free

Serie A is one of the least free-to-air of Europe's big five leagues, and it is worth being blunt about that rather than padding a page with routes that do not exist. In Italy there is no free live Serie A. Every one of the 380 matches sits behind DAZN, and the three matches per round that Sky Sport and NOW carry are co-exclusive with DAZN rather than an alternative to paying. There is no terrestrial highlights-plus-one-live-match arrangement of the kind Spain guarantees by law or Germany runs on free-to-air. It is a selection, not the full round: for every match you still need Paramount+. A handful of games each season also appear on the over-the-air CBS network, which is free with an antenna. Then there are the routes that look free and are not. Free trials are real but short and usually one per household, and they auto-renew. Illegal streams are the reason broadcasters tighten geo-blocking every season, and the picture quality on a 20:45 kick-off tells its own story. There are roughly 6.4 million Italians registered on the AIRE, the register of Italians resident abroad, and the register has more than doubled since 2006. Add short-term travellers and the number of people who pay for Serie A in one country and try to watch it in another on any given weekend is very large. The fix is mechanical. First, before you travel, confirm your subscription is active and that you can sign in — some services will not let you create a new account or add a payment method from abroad even though they will let an existing account log in. Second, install the VPN on the device you will actually watch on. A phone or laptop is straightforward; a smart TV or streaming stick often is not, in which case install the VPN on your router or use the VPN's Smart DNS feature, which handles geo-location on devices that cannot run VPN software. Third, connect to a server in the country where the subscription lives — Milan or Rome for DAZN Italia and Sky/NOW, a US city for Paramount+, Toronto for Fubo, Sydney for beIN Australia — and only then open the broadcaster's app. Order matters more than people expect: most streaming apps read your location once at launch and cache it, so an app that was already open will still think you are abroad. Force-close it and reopen after the VPN connects. Fourth, give yourself ten minutes before kick-off. If the stream refuses, switch to a different city in the same country rather than a different country, clear the app's cache, and check that your VPN's leak protection is on. Force-close it completely — swipe it away, do not just background it — and reopen. On a smart TV this sometimes means signing out and back in. The server address has been flagged. Broadcasters blocklist IP ranges known to belong to VPNs, and a busy Milan server on a Sunday evening is the most likely one to be flagged. Move to a different city in the same country before you conclude the VPN does not work; a dedicated IP, offered as an add-on by several providers, is the durable fix if you watch every week. Something is leaking outside the tunnel. If your device resolves DNS through your local internet provider, or falls back to IPv6, the broadcaster can see your real country even while the VPN is connected. Turn on leak protection or IPv6 blocking in the VPN app, then re-test. The picture starts and then collapses to a slideshow. That is usually protocol and distance rather than blocking. Switch to a WireGuard-based protocol, pick the nearest city that still sits inside the right country, and use a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A 1080p live stream needs perhaps 8–10 Mbps sustained; the problem is rarely raw bandwidth and often jitter. The device cannot run a VPN at all. Chromecast, most smart TVs, games consoles and older streaming sticks have no VPN app. Either configure the VPN on your router so everything behind it is covered, or use Smart DNS — faster, but it only handles location, not encryption.
