According to [Tempo](https://en.tempo.co/read/2111782/indonesia-unblocks-reddit-after-11-years-heres-why) and CNN Indonesia, the conditions were that Reddit geoblocked gambling and pornographic content for Indonesia and registered as a private electronic system operator (PSE). Director-General Alexander Sabar added that Komdigi will act again if illegal content becomes reachable. Our OONI pull shows the change. In the eight weeks before the decision, 28–37% of measurements of reddit.com in Indonesia hit a government block page. Verified September 2026. ### Indonesian ISPs block by rewriting DNS answers, so encrypted DNS gets past many blocks and a VPN gets past the rest Blocking in Indonesia starts with TrustPositif, the ministry's central blocklist, which ISPs are obliged to enforce. Most of them do it through the DNS resolver. When your phone asks for a blocked site, the ISP's [DNS server](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/dns-leak) answers with the address of a government block page. OONI's [2022 report with Sinar Project](https://ooni.org/post/2022-state-of-internet-censorship-indonesia) found DNS hijacking behind 95% of the blocking it measured.
