You don't need a VPN to unblock WhatsApp or FaceTime calls. The 2016 VoIP ban ended that November, and in our August 2026 OONI measurements every platform we track loaded inside Morocco. We test VPNs live across Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fez. These are the best VPNs for Morocco in 2026, ranked by call quality and privacy on Moroccan networks, access to Moroccan streaming (SNRTLive, 2M), and home-country services from Morocco. **Best alternatives:** [Proton VPN](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/protonvpn) and [NordVPN](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/nordvpn). ## Will your apps work in Morocco? Most apps work No popular apps are blocked: WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, social media, Google services, ChatGPT, Netflix and Spotify all work normally, as of October 2026. All 18 apps we track work normally in Morocco. VPNs are legal No VPN ban; encryption tools are generally accessible, though Law 53-05's crypto-authorisation rule is ambiguous for individuals. Our own August 2026 OONI measurements agree. Mobile VoIP calls (WhatsApp, Skype, Viber) were blocked on the telecoms regulator ANRT's instruction from January 2016 until ANRT ordered all three operators to restore them in November 2016, and we found no confirmed call blocking since. Add to this Morocco's status as one of Africa's biggest tourist destinations, with a record 19.8 million arrivals in 2025 drawn to Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez, Chefchaouen, Essaouira, and the Sahara — plus a thriving expat community in Marrakech and a growing digital nomad scene, and a Morocco-capable VPN becomes essential equipment. ### Keep WhatsApp and FaceTime Calls Private WhatsApp, Skype and Viber calls were blocked on Moroccan mobile networks for most of 2016, until ANRT ordered Maroc Telecom, inwi and Orange (then Méditel) to restore them. We found no confirmed call blocking since. Today the VPN's job is to encrypt calls and messages on shared riad and café Wi-Fi, which [ExpressVPN](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/expressvpn), [NordVPN](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/nordvpn) and Surfshark all do. ### Secure Riad & Hotel WiFi Moroccan riad (traditional hotels) and luxury hotels in Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fez range from Mövenpick Marrakech to family-run riad in the medina. WiFi infrastructure varies enormously. A VPN with [AES-256](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/aes-256-encryption) encryption protects banking apps and personal data on every network. ### Watch Moroccan Streaming (2M, Snrt Live) From Abroad SNRTLive (Moroccan state TV, including Arryadia, which carries Botola Pro football) played live from our test connection in [Italy](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/italy) on 23 September 2026, so it is not blocked outright. 2M's site sits behind a bot check. If a programme is rights-restricted abroad, a virtual Moroccan server gives you a Moroccan IP. ExpressVPN, [Surfshark](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/surfshark), Proton VPN and NordVPN list one. ### Watch Home Streaming and Use Banking From Morocco [Netflix](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/netflix) Morocco (45–115 MAD a month since 2 September 2026) has a different catalogue. [BBC iPlayer](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/bbc-iplayer) is UK-only, and Peacock is US-only. A VPN with home-country servers keeps subscriptions working. Banking apps from US/UK/EU banks often flag Moroccan IPs — a home-country VPN exit prevents lockouts. ## What Makes a Great Morocco VPN Morocco doesn't block the platforms we measure, so the criteria are about privacy, speed and home-country access: ### Stable Calls on Mobile and Wi-Fi Calls aren't blocked in Morocco, but quality on shared Wi-Fi varies. Fast modern protocols (ExpressVPN's Lightway, NordVPN's NordLynx, Surfshark's [WireGuard](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/wireguard)) keep call latency low, and obfuscation (NordVPN's [obfuscated servers](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/obfuscated-servers), Surfshark's Camouflage mode) is there if a network interferes with VPN traffic. ### Reliable Servers Near Morocco For speed, the nearest real servers are in [Spain](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel/spain), Portugal and France. For a Moroccan IP (Moroccan TV from abroad), ExpressVPN, Surfshark, [Proton VPN](https://vpnrank.io/reviews/protonvpn) and NordVPN offer virtual Moroccan servers, whose IPs are registered to Morocco while the hardware sits elsewhere. ### Speeds for HD/4K Streaming Maroc Telecom sells fibre at 100–200 Mb/s, but Ookla's August 2026 median fixed download is 57 Mbps, below the 69.7 Mbps mobile median. In our Q1 2026 Marrakech testing on 100 Mbps: ExpressVPN's London 82 Mbps via Lightway, NordVPN's London 85 Mbps via NordLynx. Plenty for 4K [Netflix](https://vpnrank.io/blog/how-to-watch-us-netflix-from-abroad). ### Auto-Connect on Untrusted WiFi Tourists in Morocco hop between 5-10 WiFi networks per day across Marrakech medina cafés, hotels, and beach resorts. The best Morocco-ready VPNs auto-connect on unknown WiFi. ## Morocco in September 2026: Calls, Blocking, Streaming and the New Clock Many guides still say Moroccan operators block WhatsApp and FaceTime calls. That was true for most of 2016, and we found no confirmed case since. This section sets out what our own August 2026 OONI measurements show inside Morocco, the full history of the VoIP ban, what streams in Morocco and what reaches Moroccans abroad, and what a visitor meets on arrival, including the move back to GMT on 20 September 2026. Everything was checked on 23 September 2026. ### Morocco's WhatsApp and Skype call ban ended in November 2016, and our 2026 measurements find nothing blocked In January 2016, the telecoms regulator ANRT had Morocco's three mobile operators stop free internet calls over WhatsApp, Skype and Viber, citing the licensing scheme in the 1996 telecoms law. Calls worked again from 24 October 2016, a few weeks before the COP22 climate summit in Marrakech ([Global Voices](https://advox.globalvoices.org/2016/10/26/morocco-unblocks-voip-applications-ahead-of-un-climate-conference/)). In early November ANRT wrote to Maroc Telecom, inwi and Méditel (now Orange Maroc) ordering full restoration ([Morocco World News](https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2016/11/105091/anrt-orders-moroccan-telecom-companies-fully-restore-voip/)). We searched the press, the regulator and Freedom House for any call blocking between 2017 and September 2026 and found none. Earlier versions of this page said Maroc Telecom "periodically" blocks calls. That describes 2016, not today. ![Left: ten platforms measured inside Morocco in August 2026 (Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Telegram, Signal, Discord, Netflix), all accessible on OONI measurements. Verified September 2026. Freedom House scores Morocco **Partly Free, 54/100** in [Freedom on the Net 2025](https://freedomhouse.org/country/morocco/freedom-net/2025), unchanged from 2024. It says the government "did not block or filter any websites for political, social, or religious content" during the coverage period. The constraint in Morocco is prosecution rather than blocking: the same report describes surveillance, arrests and harassment over online speech, and pervasive self-censorship on the monarchy, religion and Western Sahara. **No Moroccan law bans personal VPN use**, and we found no reported case of a visitor being penalised for one. Using a VPN does not change the legal risk of what you post. ### In Morocco, Netflix and Disney+ are available, Peacock is not, and SNRT's live channels play from abroad The streaming picture is more open than older guides suggest. Netflix bills in dirhams and raised its Moroccan prices on 2 September 2026 (Morocco World News). Disney+ has been available since its MENA launch on 8 June 2022. Maroc Telecom sells MBC's Shahid from 28 DH a month. Peacock is US-only: its help page says "Your device must physically be located in the US to stream", and from our Italian connection it redirected to its "unavailable" page. For Moroccans abroad, **SNRTLive's Arryadia channel, which carries Botola Pro football, played live in our browser from Italy**, so it is not blocked outright. 2m.ma returned a Cloudflare bot check, so we could not determine whether it is geo-restricted. | Service | Status (23 Sep 2026) | Price in Morocco | What this doesn't automatically prove | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Netflix | Available in Morocco | 45 / 80 / 115 MAD a month (Essential / Standard / Premium) from 2 Sep 2026 | That the catalogue matches your home country's. If you need a Moroccan IP address from abroad, several providers offer **virtual Moroccan servers**. The IP is registered to Morocco, but the machine sits elsewhere. ExpressVPN lists virtual servers with Rabat IP addresses, Surfshark lists four virtual Moroccan servers, Proton VPN offers a Moroccan IP, and NordVPN's server page is titled "Morocco virtual VPN servers". Earlier versions of this page suggested Spanish or Portuguese servers for Moroccan TV. Those give you a Spanish or Portuguese IP, not a Moroccan one. ### Arriving in Morocco: mobile data beats riad Wi-Fi, a SIM needs your passport, and the clocks are now on GMT ![Bar chart of Morocco's Ookla medians for August 2026: mobile download 69.7 Mbps and upload 16.3 Mbps, fixed download 57.0 Mbps and upload 52.5 Mbps; plus 5G launch on 7 November 2025, passport registration and Orange Marhaba eSIM from 120 DH, and the return to UTC+0 on 20 September 2026](https://vpnrank.io/enrich/morocco/morocco-connectivity.png) Ookla Speedtest Global Index (August 2026), Ecofin Agency, orange.ma and Hespress. On our [VPN affordability index](https://vpnrank.io/research/vpn-affordability-index), a year of VPN at a constant $95.19 costs someone on Morocco's average income ($4,360 GNI per capita) **7.97 days of income**. That is about the same as Tunisia (8.08), more than Algeria (5.94), less than Egypt (10.66), and about eight times Spain (0.94). For a Moroccan buying one, the cheapest honest route is a long plan at the [lowest price we have tracked](https://vpnrank.io/vpn-price-index), and our [deals page](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/deals) follows prices daily. Personal data in Morocco is governed by Law 09-08 (2009) and the CNDP regulator. A GDPR-style reform is being discussed but has not been enacted. ### When something doesn't work in Morocco: symptom and fix | Symptom | Likely cause | Fix | | --- | --- | --- | | A WhatsApp call is choppy on riad Wi-Fi | A shared, slow connection, not a block | Switch to mobile data (4G/5G is usually faster than fixed lines), or reconnect the VPN to a nearby server such as Spain or France. | | Peacock says it isn't available | Peacock is US-only | Peacock requires your device to be in the US, so there is no official fix abroad. | | Your phone shows the wrong time after 20 September 2026 | Morocco moved to UTC+0, and the device's time-zone data is old | Update the OS, or set Africa/Casablanca manually and check the time. | | Your home bank flags a login from Morocco | A foreign IP triggers fraud checks | Connect to a server in your home country before opening the app. Turn on the [kill switch](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/kill-switch) so the app never sees your Moroccan IP. | | Arryadia or 2M won't play from abroad | Match rights, or a bot check | Use a virtual Moroccan server from a provider that lists one, then clear the site's cookies. | | A free VPN is slow or keeps dropping | Congested free servers | Proton VPN's free plan is the free option we cover. Paid providers offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. | Fixes built from the sources cited above. Verified September 2026. > Practical ruleIn Morocco a VPN is for privacy on shared Wi-Fi and a home-country connection for your banking and streaming. You don't need it to unblock WhatsApp or FaceTime calls, which have worked since November 2016. If a call is poor, try mobile data before changing VPN settings. ## How to Set Up Your VPN For Morocco 1 ### Install on all devices at home Download the VPN app on phone, laptop, and tablet on your home WiFi. Verify it connects to Spain/Portugal and home-country servers. 2 ### Enable auto-connect on untrusted WiFi Set auto-connect for unknown WiFi. This ensures encryption activates the moment you join Marrakech medina café, hotel, or riad WiFi. 3 ### Test a WhatsApp call through the VPN At home, make a test WhatsApp call with the VPN connected so you know how it sounds. Calls aren't blocked in Morocco, but this lets you compare VPN servers before you rely on riad Wi-Fi. 4 ### Enable kill switch Turn on the [kill switch](https://vpnrank.io/glossary/kill-switch). This blocks all traffic if VPN drops, preventing IP leaks during network switches. 5 ### Bookmark Spain and home-country servers Mark Spain (or Portugal) and your home-country server as favorites for one-tap switching. ## How We Tested VPNs in Morocco Our Morocco testing rotates between Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fez twice yearly. 1 ### Call Quality on Moroccan Networks We test WhatsApp Voice, FaceTime, Skype on Maroc Telecom SIMs. We measure call connection success, audio quality, and drop rate over 10-minute calls. 2 ### Moroccan Streaming Access We verify each VPN doesn't break SNRTLive, Arryadia and 2M, and check which providers offer a Moroccan IP. 3 ### Home-Service Access From Morocco From Casablanca, we connect to US/UK/EU servers and verify [Netflix region](https://vpnrank.io/blog/how-to-change-netflix-region-with-a-vpn) access, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Peacock, HBO Max all work. Morocco testing runs March and September. ## Frequently Asked Questions About Morocco ### Are VPNs legal in Morocco? Yes, VPNs are legal in Morocco for personal use. Moroccan law does not criminalise VPN use, and we found no reported case of a visitor penalised for one. What you post online is still subject to Moroccan law, and Freedom House reports arrests over online speech. Tourists, expats, and Moroccan residents widely use VPNs. ### Can I make WhatsApp Voice calls on Maroc Telecom? Yes, without a VPN. Moroccan operators blocked WhatsApp, Skype and Viber calls on mobile networks from January 2016 until ANRT ordered them to restore calls in November 2016. We found no confirmed call blocking since. If a call is poor, the usual cause is a slow shared Wi-Fi connection, and mobile 4G/5G (median 69.7 Mbps in August 2026) is often the better choice. A VPN still encrypts your calls and messages on untrusted Wi-Fi. ### Will my Netflix work in Morocco? Netflix works in Morocco (45–115 MAD a month since 2 September 2026), but the catalogue differs from your home country's. To keep your home catalog, connect to a VPN server in your home country before opening Netflix. ### Is Marrakech riad WiFi safe? Marrakech riad WiFi quality varies, and budget riads in the medina often have one shared network for every guest. A VPN with AES-256 protects your traffic on any network. ### Which VPN is best for digital nomads in Marrakech? Long-term Marrakech residents need reliable speeds for video calls and remote work. ExpressVPN's Spain server (low ping from Morocco) plus Lightway is the most consistent for video conferencing. NordVPN's multiple Spain locations work well. Surfshark wins on price. ### Does Peacock work in Morocco? No. Peacock is US-only, and its help centre says "Your device must physically be located in the US to stream." From outside the US it redirects to an unavailable page. Netflix, Disney+ (since June 2022) and Shahid are available in Morocco. ### Will a VPN work on Moroccan eSIM (Maroc Telecom, Orange, Inwi)? Yes. Moroccan SIMs work with all major paid VPNs. You need your passport to register a line, and Orange Maroc's Marhaba tourist eSIM offers unlimited internet from 120 DH. International eSIMs (Airalo Morocco, Holafly Morocco) also work, and all three operators have run 5G since 7 November 2025. WireGuard variants work most consistently. ## Related VPN Guides [Best VPN for WhatsApp Calls](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/whatsapp-calls) [Best VPN for Travel](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel) [Best VPN for Egypt](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel/egypt) [Best VPN for Spain](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel/spain) [Best VPN for Peacock](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/peacock) [Best VPN for Dubai & UAE](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel/uae-dubai) [Best VPN for Saudi Arabia](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel/saudi-arabia) [Best VPN for Turkey](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/travel/turkey) [Best VPN for Streaming](https://vpnrank.io/best-vpn/streaming) ## Sources & Further Reading - [Freedom House — Freedom on the Net 2025: Morocco](https://freedomhouse.org/country/morocco/freedom-net/2025) - [OONI — Web Connectivity measurement data (via our monthly censorship index)](https://ooni.org/) - [Global Voices — Morocco unblocks VoIP applications (26 Oct 2016)](https://advox.globalvoices.org/2016/10/26/morocco-unblocks-voip-applications-ahead-of-un-climate-conference/) - [Morocco World News — ANRT orders operators to fully restore VoIP (4 Nov 2016)](https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2016/11/105091/anrt-orders-moroccan-telecom-companies-fully-restore-voip/) - [Ookla Speedtest Global Index — Morocco](https://www.speedtest.net/global-index/morocco) - [Ecofin Agency — Morocco launches 5G (9 Nov 2025)](https://www.ecofinagency.com/news-digital/0911-50287-morocco-launches-5g-nationwide-ahead-of-2025-africa-cup-of-nations) - [Orange Maroc — line identification and Marhaba tourist eSIM](https://www.orange.ma/Recharges/Marhaba) - [Hespress — Morocco scraps GMT+1 (5 Sep 2026)](https://en.hespress.com/144914-after-eight-years-morocco-prepares-to-scrap-gmt1.html) - [Morocco World News — Netflix raises prices in Morocco (6 Aug 2026)](https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2026/08/333420/netflix-raises-subscription-prices-in-morocco-starting-september-2/) - [Peacock Help — where Peacock is available](https://www.peacocktv.com/help/article/where-is-peacock-available) - [Ecofin Agency — record 19.8 million arrivals in 2025](https://www.ecofinagency.com/news-industry/0701-51787-morocco-tourist-arrivals-hit-record-19-8-million-in-2025) - [World Bank — GNI per capita (via our VPN affordability index)](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GNP.PCAP.CD) - [NordVPN no-logs assurance (Deloitte)](https://nordvpn.com/blog/nordvpn-no-logs-assurance-deloitte/) - [WireGuard protocol documentation](https://www.wireguard.com/) Find Your Perfect VPN Answer 5 quick questions and find your match in 30 seconds [Take Quiz](https://vpnrank.io/which-vpn#quiz) Structured data (JSON-LD): ```json {"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Organization","@id":"https://vpnrank.io/#organization","name":"VPNRank","alternateName":"vpnrank.io","url":"https://vpnrank.io","email":"hello@vpnrank.io","logo":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://vpnrank.io/logos/favicon.png","width":500,"height":500},"description":"Independent VPN comparison. Moroccan law does not criminalise VPN use, and we found no reported case of a visitor penalised for one. What you post online is still subject to Moroccan law, and Freedom House reports arrests over online speech. Tourists, expats, and Moroccan residents widely use VPNs."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Can I make WhatsApp Voice calls on Maroc Telecom?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Yes, without a VPN. A VPN still encrypts your calls and messages on untrusted Wi-Fi."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Will my Netflix work in Morocco?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Netflix works in Morocco (45–115 MAD a month since 2 September 2026), but the catalogue differs from your home country's.
