How to Watch ITVX From Abroad: Why It's UK-Only and What Actually Works

As of October 2026, ITVX and ITVX Premium can only be used in the UK. ITV's help centre says “you can't stream live or on demand shows on ITVX when you're outside of the UK”, and paying for Premium does not change that. The one route ITV offers travellers is Premium downloads, made on a phone or tablet before you leave and watchable for up to 7 days. ITV checks the IP address you connect from and says it will not play shows if it detects a VPN.

ITVX can only be used in the UK, and paying for Premium does not change that

ITVX is ITV's streaming service, launched on 8 December 2022 to replace the ITV Hub. ITV's help article on Premium abroad is direct: “Due to our broadcast and content licences, ITVX and ITVX Premium can only be used in the UK.” So the answer to “which countries can you watch ITVX in” is one: the United Kingdom. A Premium subscription changes what you can watch at home, not where you can stream it.

The reason is the rights deals. ITV's help centre puts it in one sentence: “Our broadcast and content agreements mean that ITVX can only be streamed while you are in the UK.” Many programmes on ITVX are bought in from other studios, cleared for British viewers only, and some shown on ITV's channels have no online rights at all. ITV says those show “programme is unavailable” on ITVX even inside the UK, which is not a fault.

That is why ITVX can look as if it works abroad. From an Italian connection on 3 October 2026, itv.com loaded normally: the live guide listed ITV1, ITV2 and ITV's curated channels, and the Premium page showed its prices. Pressing Watch Live opened the sign-in screen. ITV's help centre says that once a viewer outside the UK tries to play, the stream is replaced by an ITV-101 error.

ITVX checks your IP address and refuses to play when it detects a VPN

ITV checks location from the network you connect through. Its help article on the subject says: “If your IP address suggests you're not in the UK, you won't be able to watch our shows.” The same article adds: “You won't be able to play shows if ITVX detects that you might be using a VPN.” Both checks run when you press play, live or on demand.

ITV lists three reasons ITVX may decide you are outside the UK: you are using a VPN, a proxy or a similar service; you really are abroad; or your internet provider routes your connection through servers located abroad. For the third case, ITV suggests checking where your IP address is registered using the RIPE database, the registry for European IP addresses. The error itself comes in a family of codes that share the number 101: ITV-1S-101, ITV-1X-101, ITV-1T-101, ITV-1M-101, ITV-1V-101 and ITV-1A-101. ITV's help page says each one means “you're not able to stream on demand content or live ITV channels”, and that the most common reason is that ITVX has detected you are outside the UK. For anyone at home in the UK, ITV's instruction is plain: “If you're currently in the UK but using a VPN, you'll need to turn off the VPN to watch ITVX.”

Premium downloads are the one official way to watch ITVX abroad

ITV offers travellers exactly one route: download shows with ITVX Premium while you are still in the UK, then watch them offline anywhere. ITV's Premium help says to “make sure you download the show while you're still in the UK”, and adds that downloads “are subject to licensing restrictions and limited to mobile versions of ITVX”. Laptops, smart TVs and streaming sticks cannot download.

Two clocks apply. A download stays available offline for up to 7 days, and once you start playing it you have a 48-hour window to finish it. ITV's downloads page also sets the limits on the device: iOS 14 or later, Android 7.0 or later, and up to six downloads at a time. In practice that covers a long-haul flight or the first week of a holiday, not a month away or a live match.

If the episode you wanted has expired abroad, there is no way to renew it from outside the UK; a new download needs a UK connection like any stream. Plan the order: download the episodes you will watch first, and start them within the week.

ITVX Premium costs £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year, and live TV still has ads

ITVX Premium costs £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year, which ITV describes as two months free. Premium adds the BritBox catalogue, ad-free on-demand viewing and downloads. ITV's help page is precise about the ad-free promise: “Ad-free applies to our on-demand library only… Live TV plays with ads.” Anyone paying to skip adverts on a live match will still see them.

The free tier needs an account, and ITV's sign-in screen states that you must be 16 or over to create one; Apple and Google sign-in are offered alongside email. The Premium page, read on 3 October 2026, advertises “26,000 hours of shows and films”, well above the 10,000 hours this page quoted from ITVX's launch. Premium can be bought on the web, through Apple or through Amazon Fire, and ITV says it works on almost any device except Samsung TVs from before 2016.

Live ITVX carries ITV1, ITV2, ITVBe, ITV3 and ITV4, and none of them streams abroad

ITV's live TV help lists the channels you can stream as “ITV1, ITV2, ITVBe, ITV3 and ITV4, as well as curated channels”, and catch-up covers shows from the last 30 days. The live guide captured on 3 October 2026 also listed curated channels such as ITV Crime Drama and ITV Quiz. All of them are covered by the same UK-only rule, so watching ITV2 live abroad hits the same ITV-101 error as on-demand viewing.

Up to four devices can stream on one account at once. ITV's device list, updated 16 June 2026, covers LG smart TVs from 2016, Samsung from 2017 (2016 Samsung models get on-demand only), Apple TV on tvOS 18 or later, iPhone and iPad on iOS 15 or later, Android 7.0 or later, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Roku, NOW, Sky Q, Sky Glass and Sky Stream, Virgin Media, YouView, Freely, Freesat and Freeview Play.

Most VPN providers' own help pages no longer promise ITVX from abroad

The VPN providers' own help pages have shifted. ExpressVPN's ITVX troubleshooting page, updated 21 July 2026, opens with “This guide is for UK users who are unable to stream ITVX while connected to the VPN”, and states that using its service to circumvent geographic restrictions breaches its own Terms of Service. The table records what each provider in our database says, read on 3 October 2026.

Set beside ITV's statement that it will not play shows when it detects a VPN, the honest summary is that a UK server from abroad breaks ITV's rules and, for most providers, their own. Practical rule:Download before you fly, watch within seven days, and finish each episode within 48 hours of pressing play. ITV supports nothing else abroad, live or on demand.

A TV Licence covers live ITVX in the UK; on-demand viewing needs none

In the UK, GOV.UK sets the rule: you need a TV Licence to “watch or record live TV on any channel or service”, and to use BBC iPlayer. You do not need one for on-demand TV on other services; GOV.UK gives All 4 as its example, and TV Licensing's own FAQ names ITVX. Watching a programme on ITVX at the moment it is broadcast counts as live TV. A licence costs £180 (£60.50 for a black-and-white set), and watching live TV without one can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.

The licence is a UK obligation tied to viewing in the UK; this page does not cover how it applies to anyone watching from outside the country, because TV Licensing's own guidance on that could not be read for this update. ITV's big live sport for 2026-27 is rugby, and it stays UK-only online

With the 2026 men's World Cup over (ITV's coverage of the opening match peaked at 7.7 million viewers), ITV's next live sport is rugby. Under the four-year deal ITV and the BBC agreed for 2026 to 2029, ITV shows 10 live men's Six Nations matches each season, including every England fixture, on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player. ITV also holds the new Nations Championship in 2026 and 2028.

Further ahead, ITV and the BBC have confirmed free-to-air coverage of the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, and trade press reported in July 2026 that ITV won exclusive UK rights to the 2027 men's Rugby World Cup in Australia. When ITVX says you are outside the UK while you are at home, check the IP address first

The ITV-101 error also reaches people sitting in Britain, because ITVX judges the IP address, not the person. ITV names three causes and each has a direct fix. Work through them in order before reinstalling anything.

1. 1A VPN or proxy is on. ITV's instruction for viewers in the UK is to turn off the VPN. Browser proxy extensions and work networks that route traffic through another country count too.
2. 2Your internet provider routes you through servers abroad. Check the country your address is registered to with our what is my IP tool, or in the RIPE database as ITV suggests, and contact the provider if it shows a country other than the UK.
3. 3You really are abroad. Only downloads made in the UK will play; streaming returns when you do.
4. 4A download stopped playing. Check the two limits: 7 days after downloading, 48 hours after you first pressed play.
5. 5One programme says it is unavailable but others play. That title has no online rights; ITV says this is not a fault.
