Here's which VPNs actually work in Iran right now, tested from Tehran through the filtering, and how to set one up before you land. Three honest things. First, most VPNs fail there. The ones that work all have one thing switched on, and we'll show you which setting.

Second, inside you can't even download the app. Eight of the eight provider sites in our index are blocked, according to independent measurements from August 2026. First, what's blocked inside Iran? Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube and foreign news are blocked: Instagram since 2022, Telegram since 2018. Netflix, PayPal and most home banking apps are different. The companies refuse Iranian connections because of sanctions, and a VPN location in your home country gets those accounts back.

Why do most VPNs fail? Since May, Iran's filtering only lets approved connections through. Anything it doesn't recognise is dropped, and what it does let through, it inspects, cutting whatever looks like a VPN. The ones that work look like ordinary web traffic. It never connects? Change location first, then switch on the disguise. It connects, then drops after seconds? Try a different disguised type. Can't reach the provider's site? Use the app you already installed; there's no fix from inside. The rule: fix the connection type before you blame the location.

The honest part. Officially, only government-approved VPNs are legal in Iran, and foreign ones sit in a grey zone. In practice, 70 to 80% of Iranians use one. Enforcement targets those who build and sell the tools, not ordinary users and not visitors, and we're aware of no documented case of a tourist prosecuted simply for using one.
