How to Watch the 2026 Emmys From Anywhere

The Emmys moved to Monday because NBC has Sunday football

The 78th Emmy Awards are on Monday 14 September 2026, not the traditional Sunday. The reason is not scheduling whimsy: NBC holds the telecast this year, and NBC also holds Sunday Night Football, the most-watched programme on American television. Rather than put its own awards show against its own football franchise, NBC moves the ceremony to Monday.

This has happened every time NBC has drawn the Emmys in the current rotation. The 70th ceremony aired Monday 17 September 2018 on NBC. The 74th aired Monday 12 September 2022 on NBC. The 78th airs Monday 14 September 2026. The pattern is reliable enough to predict: when NBC has the show, the show is on a Monday.

For an American viewer that is a minor inconvenience. For everyone else it is the single most consequential fact on this page, because 8:00pm on the American east coast is already the following morning across Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. A Sunday-night ceremony lands on a Monday morning; a Monday-night ceremony lands on a Tuesday morning, mid-working-week, with no weekend either side of it.

Only two markets outside the US have confirmed 2026 coverage

The Television Academy runs an official Where to Watch page for the ceremony. On 28 August 2026 it named one country: the United States, on NBC and Peacock. That is not an oversight in a small corner of the site — it is the Academy's own answer to the question, and it is the clearest single indicator of how far the show's international footprint has shrunk.

Two national broadcasters have confirmed carriage independently. Bell Media's press release states the 78th Emmy Awards air Monday 14 September at 8pm ET / 5pm PT on CTV in Canada and stream the next day on Crave. Australian listings have the ceremony streaming live on Binge on 15 September, which is 10:00am AEST — the same moment as the American broadcast, on the other side of the date line.

The United Kingdom is the notable absence. Sky carried the ceremony on Sky Max and Sky Showcase as recently as the 2024 show, but no British broadcaster carried the 77th ceremony in 2025, and as of 28 August 2026 none has announced the 78th. British viewers who want it live are, at the time of writing, looking at a 1:00am Tuesday start with no domestic service to watch it on.

In the US, "free" and "streaming" do not overlap

There is a genuinely free way to watch the 78th Emmys, and it involves no internet at all. NBC is a free-to-air broadcast network: an antenna inside a US station's coverage area gets the full three hours with no account, no subscription and no sign-in. It is the cheapest route to a major awards show in America and it is invisible to anyone outside the country, because there is nothing on the network to reach.

The streaming versions all carry a condition. NBC's own help centre says the nbc.com live stream requires you to link an account from a participating pay-TV provider, that the streams are location-based and you must be physically located in the United States, and that most providers require relinking roughly once a month. Peacock retired its free tier some time ago, so its live stream sits behind a paid plan.

Peacock changed price three weeks before the show — and changes again three days after it

If Peacock is your route, the timing this year is unusually specific. NBCUniversal raised Peacock's prices on 18 August 2026 — its fourth increase in four years. The new rates applied immediately to new and returning subscribers. For people who were already subscribed, the new price takes effect on their next billing date on or after 17 September — three days after the ceremony.

Practical rule:If you are subscribing for one night, subscribe as late as you sensibly can and set a cancellation reminder for 15 September. A monthly plan bought for a three-hour telecast is only cheap if it ends after one cycle — and this year the renewal lands two days after the show.

2026 is the last Emmys of the wheel deal, so next year's answer will be different

The reason the Emmys move networks every year is a contract. In August 2018 the Television Academy renewed an eight-year agreement with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC under which the four networks rotate the telecast — the industry calls it the wheel — beginning with Fox in 2019 and giving each network two ceremonies. The 78th, on NBC, is the last one under that agreement.

As of July 2026 the Academy had not announced where the ceremony goes from 2027. Reported options include a single network or streamer taking the rights outright, another rotation, or a simulcast across several outlets at once. Any of those changes the practical answer to "which app do I need" — and a simulcast in particular would change it in a way that matters to viewers abroad, because it would put the show on more than one service on the same night.

The audience data explains why this is being renegotiated rather than quietly rolled over. The 77th ceremony drew more than 7.42 million viewers on CBS in September 2025 — up 8% year on year and the largest Emmys audience since 2021 — with live streaming on Paramount+ up 76% from the last CBS telecast. The show is growing again, and the streaming share of that growth is the part everyone is bidding on.

What a VPN changes here, and the three things it does not

A VPN routes your connection through a server in another country, so the service you open sees that country's IP address instead of your own. For a geo-restricted stream that is the relevant variable, and it is the reason people reach for one on awards night. It is worth being precise about what that does and does not solve for this particular broadcast.

There is also a practical point specific to a live three-hour telecast. Awards shows are a single continuous stream at a fixed hour, so a connection that drops halfway through cannot be made up later the way a paused film can. That makes consistent throughput on long sessions more useful than headline peak speed, and it is why the ranking on this page is ordered by measured speed rather than by price.
